Junior Rangers (Ages 7–12)

Kids learn hands-on alongside an interpreter about the park's natural and cultural resources. Junior Rangers runs at many California state parks, with activities shaped to each one. Children who finish ten Junior Ranger classes or self-guided experiences earn the program's sabertooth sew-on patch, and progress is tracked in a stamp book handed out at the first class. The parks.ca.gov San Elijo page lists upcoming Junior Rangers dates in its events box.

Little Rangers (Ages 3–7)

An introduction to nature for younger children, with hands-on, age-appropriate activities in the park. Little Rangers does not follow the Junior Ranger patch path.

Wildlife Walks (All Ages)

Interpreters teach how to watch wildlife safely. The focus changes with the season. It might mean using binoculars or a spotting scope to look for migrating gray whales, or practicing good tide pool etiquette while exploring the marine protected area off the beach (see Swami's Reef). For ADA accommodations, call (760) 753-5091 at least 24 hours ahead.

Nature Table (All Ages)

A casual drop-in at the park office. Staff bring biofacts and natural history about animals found in Swami's State Marine Conservation Area, and the display changes from one table to the next.

Summer Campfire Programs

During peak season, between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, San Elijo's interpretive staff host bi-weekly evening campfire programs. They are aimed at families and are often interactive. Dates are posted on the park's upcoming events page.

Litter Getter

A statewide self-guided activity for kids. Participants get gloves and a paper bag, collect litter in the park, and show a State Park interpreter or park aide the full bag to earn stickers and a certificate. Not every state park keeps the supplies, so call the park at (760) 753-5091 to ask whether San Elijo is taking part.
